Love grows from understanding. Do you know the city of Jakarta well enough? On June 22, 2021, Jakarta officially turned 494 years old. Of course, Jakarta has a lot of history and interesting facts that you might not know. Let's take a look at the facts of Jakarta that will make you love it even more.
Both a City and a Province
Not many people know that the city of Jakarta was first a part of West Java, precisely from Independence Day until 1959. Then, Soekarno (the first President) appointed Soemarno Sosroatmodjo as the first Governor of Jakarta. As the capital city of Indonesia, Soekarno also assigned a special status to our beloved city, namely the Special Capital Region (DKI) Jakarta since 1961. Therefore, many get easily confused. Is Jakarta a city or a province? Now you know the answer, Jakarta is a city and province at once!
Jakarta is Not the First Name
It turns out that Jakarta, which continues to experience changes in infrastructure, had plenty of name changes. Maybe you've only been referring to the capital city of Indonesia as Jakarta, when actually that's not the official name. Since 1999, with the enactment of Law Number 34 of 1999 concerning the Provincial Government of the Special Capital Region of the Republic of Indonesia, Jakarta, this city has been given the name DKI Provincial Government (Capital Special Region) Jakarta. It's a pretty long name, isn't it?
Previously, the city of Jakarta was recorded to have 13 name changes. Its first name was Sunda Kelapa which was officially used before it was taken by Fatahillah in 1927. Later, the name was changed to Jayakarta which inspired the name Jakarta today. Some of the names of Jakarta that have been used include Stad Batavia, Jakarta Toko Betsu Shi, and Kota Praja Djakarta Raya.
There are More Than 100 Islands in Jakarta
The city of Jakarta is a metropolitan city, but it is also worthy of being called a city with a thousand islands. Whenever you miss relaxing on the beach or want to snorkel in the open sea, you don't have to go all the way to Bali or Raja Ampat. As a province, DKI Jakarta also covers the Kepulauan Seribu Regency which consists of 110 islands. No wonder that Jakarta is often considered as the complete tourist destination.
If you want to go on vacation at Kepulauan Seribu, you only need to travel a distance of 20 minutes to 3.5 hours by taking a wooden ferry or speedboat. Around Muara Karang there are also many travel agents who sell tour packages to Kepulauan Seribu at a price below IDR 1 million per person.
A City with Hundreds of Malls
Want to shop at world’s famous stores? Or maybe tired of exploring Jakarta under the hot sun? No need to worry because Jakarta has more than 100 malls to answer all your needs. In fact, Jakarta is the city with the most malls in the world according to Local Guides Connect, which notes that there are more than 200 malls in this city. No matter where you are in Jakarta, it feels like you can get to a mall in just 30 minutes.
Some malls even have special attractions such as an ice skating rink, outdoor park, meeting hall, roller coaster, and shooting range area. A number of well-known malls in Jakarta include Pondok Indah Mall, Central Park Mall, PIK Avenue, Kota Kasablanka Mall, and Grand Indonesia.

These buildings are office buildings, apartments, and hotels. Not surprisingly, Jakarta is indeed the center of business and government in Indonesia.
